Lawn Fertilization in Andrews, TX

Andrews lawns grow in fast-draining sand, often over caliche, with alkaline soil, hard water, long hot summers and plenty of wind. A lawn fed at the right time handles that stress better and leaves less room for weeds. Tejas Pest & Weed Control offers lawn fertilization and fungus care for Andrews homes and commercial properties, along with weed control, aeration and pest control. We're licensed through the Texas Department of Agriculture (TPCL 0791384) and have been working West Texas since 2018.

Our Andrews yard is at 2184 SE 2460, Andrews, TX 79714. It's a working yard, not a storefront, so call or text before you stop by: 432-934-5248 · office@tejaspwc.com.

Andrews Soil: Sand, Caliche and High pH

Most Andrews yards sit on sand, many with caliche below. Both change how fertilizer works:

  • Sandy soil: water and nitrogen drain past the roots quickly, so smaller, more frequent feedings hold up better than one heavy application.

  • Caliche: a hard layer keeps roots shallow, so the lawn dries out fast and fertilizer on dry ground can burn instead of soaking in.

  • High pH and iron chlorosis: alkaline soil and hard water can lock up iron and other micronutrients. Grass turns pale or yellow even with enough nitrogen; an iron or micronutrient feeding usually helps more.

A soil test (for example through Texas A&M AgriLife) shows what your yard actually needs, and we're glad to work from your results.

Bermuda, St. Augustine and Buffalo Grass in Andrews

Most Andrews lawns are bermuda, with St. Augustine in shady, well-watered yards and buffalo grass on some low-water lawns. All are warm-season grasses, but they don't feed the same:

  • Bermuda: the hungriest. Feed after spring green-up (not before; early feeding mostly helps weeds) and through summer, matched to your watering.

  • St. Augustine: moderate feedings; too much nitrogen makes soft growth that invites fungus.

  • Buffalo grass: needs very little fertilizer. Heavy feeding mostly helps bermuda and weeds crowd it out.

Fall Winterizer Timing

For warm-season grass here, the fall "winterizer" is really an early-fall feeding: a lighter application in September or early October, while the grass is still growing, helps it recover from summer and store energy for spring. Heavy late-fall nitrogen pushes tender growth before a freeze and can feed fungus. If that window has passed, skip nitrogen and plan for spring; late fall is still a good time for a winter-weed pre-emergent.

Watering, Wind and Fertilizer

Fertilizer has to be watered in, and on sandy Andrews soil one deep watering beats several light ones. Please check current watering rules from the City of Andrews or your water provider; we time applications around your allowed days and the forecast, and hold off on windy days when product could blow off target. Water early in the morning; evening watering keeps blades wet overnight, which helps fungus.

Brown Patch and Other Lawn Fungus

Cool, damp fall and spring nights can bring brown patch (also called large patch), especially on St. Augustine and in yards watered at night. Look for round brown or yellow patches that spread outward, often with a darker edge, and blades that pull loose easily at the base.

We handle fertilizer and fungus together: nitrogen timing, watering changes, and fungus treatments when they fit the grass and season. More on our Fertilizer & Fungus page.

Fertilizing, Weed Control and Aeration

Sticker burrs (sandbur) and goatheads move into thin, sandy turf fast. A pre-emergent stops the seed; fertilizer helps the grass thicken and take the space back. On packed ground, core aeration lets water and fertilizer reach the roots.

FAQ — Lawn Fertilization Andrews TX

Q: Do you fertilize lawns in Andrews?

A: Yes. Our Andrews yard is at 2184 SE 2460, Andrews, TX 79714. We offer lawn fertilization and fungus care for homes and businesses. Call or text 432-934-5248 or email office@tejaspwc.com.

Q: When should I put down a fall winterizer in Andrews?

A: For bermuda and St. Augustine, a lighter feeding in September or early October, while the grass is still growing, works best. Skip heavy late-fall nitrogen; once the grass is slowing down for winter, wait for spring green-up.

Q: Why is my Andrews lawn still yellow after fertilizer?

A: Often it is iron chlorosis. Alkaline soil and hard water can lock up iron and other micronutrients, and sandy soil lets nutrients drain away. A soil test and an iron or micronutrient feeding usually help more than extra nitrogen.

Q: What causes brown circles in my St. Augustine?

A: In fall and spring it is often brown patch, a fungus that likes cool, damp nights, night watering and heavy nitrogen. Water early in the morning, ease off the nitrogen and call us about a fungus treatment.

Q: Is your Andrews location a storefront?

A: No. 2184 SE 2460 is a working yard where our crews and trucks are based, so call or text 432-934-5248 before you stop by.
