FAQ — Lawn Fertilization Midland TX

Q: Do you fertilize lawns in Midland?

A: Yes. We offer lawn fertilization and fungus care for Midland homes and businesses from our Midland yard at 3112 E County Rd 139, Midland, TX 79706. Call or text 432-934-5248 or email office@tejaspwc.com.

Q: When should I fertilize a bermuda lawn in Midland?

A: After spring green-up, once the soil is warm and the grass is growing, then moderate feedings through summer and a lighter final feeding in early fall. Avoid heavy nitrogen late in the fall.

Q: Why is my Midland lawn yellow even after fertilizing?

A: Midland's alkaline, caliche soil can tie up iron and other micronutrients, so grass can look pale even with enough nitrogen. A soil test and the right product help more than adding extra nitrogen.

Q: Should I aerate before fertilizing?

A: On compacted Midland soil it often helps. Core aeration opens the ground so water and fertilizer reach the roots. We can plan aeration and fertilizing together.

Q: Does fertilizing help with sticker burrs and weeds?

A: A thick, healthy lawn leaves less room for weeds, but fertilizer alone won't stop sticker burrs. Pair it with a pre-emergent in late winter to early spring and our weed control.

Midland lawns grow in tough ground: alkaline soil, caliche close to the surface in many neighborhoods, hard summer heat, steady wind, and watering that is limited by city schedules. Fertilizer can help a lawn hold up through all of that, but only when the timing and the amount fit the grass and the season. Tejas Pest & Weed Control offers lawn fertilization and fungus care for Midland homes and commercial properties, alongside our weed control and lawn aeration. We're licensed through the Texas Department of Agriculture (TPCL 0791384) and have been working West Texas since 2018.

What Midland Soil Means for Fertilizer

A lot of Midland soil is alkaline (high pH), and caliche layers can sit just a few inches down. That affects feeding in a few ways:

  • Shallow roots: turf over caliche can't root deep, so it dries out fast and uses nutrients unevenly. Light, well-timed feedings work better than one heavy dose.

  • Yellowing in alkaline soil: high pH can tie up iron and other micronutrients, so grass can look pale even when there's plenty of nitrogen. Piling on more nitrogen doesn't fix that.

  • Runoff and burn: fertilizer on dry, compacted ground can run off or burn the turf. Watering it in and opening the soil first both matter.

If you want numbers, a soil test (Texas A&M AgriLife runs one) is the best starting point, and we're glad to work from your results.

Bermuda and St. Augustine Timing in Midland

Most Midland lawns are bermuda, with St. Augustine in shadier, better-watered yards. Both are warm-season grasses, so they use fertilizer while they're actively growing:

  • Spring: after green-up, once the soil has warmed and the grass is actually growing. Feeding dormant grass mostly feeds weeds.

  • Summer: moderate feedings matched to your watering. Heavy nitrogen in peak heat on a dry lawn does more harm than good.

  • Early fall: a final, lighter feeding helps the lawn recover from summer and store energy before dormancy. Skip heavy nitrogen late in the fall.

St. Augustine is also prone to fungus in fall and spring when nights are cool and the grass stays wet. That's why we handle fertilizer and fungus together. See Fertilizer & Fungus.

Watering Rules and Fertilizer

Fertilizer needs water to move into the root zone, and Midland watering is set by the city's schedule, which can change during drought. We plan applications around the days you're allowed to water and around the forecast, so the product gets watered in rather than sitting on the surface. Please check the City of Midland's current watering rules for your address.

How Fertilizing Ties to Weed Control and Aeration

A thick, well-fed lawn shades the soil and leaves less room for sticker burrs (sandbur), goatheads, and broadleaf weeds. Pre-emergent keeps the weed seed from coming up, and fertilizer helps the grass fill the gaps. On compacted Midland ground, core aeration opens the soil so water and fertilizer reach the roots instead of running down the gutter. Fall is a good time to put aeration, a light feeding, and a pre-emergent for winter weeds into one plan.
