Dry Weeds and Fire Safety in Andrews and Seminole: Clear Your Property Line Before Winter
By late October, most of the summer weeds around Andrews and Seminole have turned brown and brittle. They are not growing much anymore, but they have not gone anywhere either. Dry weeds piled along fences, driveways, and the back of the property can sit there all winter, and in our part of West Texas, winter and early spring often bring dry air and strong wind.
Tip: walk your property line this week
Take a slow lap around your home, shop, or acreage and look for dry growth in these spots:
Fence lines and gates, where weeds and blown-in brush pile up against the wire.
Along driveways and caliche roads, where tall dry weeds hide the edge and catch anything blowing by.
Around propane tanks, AC units, and electrical boxes. Keep these areas clear so they are easy to see and reach.
Next to the house, garage, and barn walls, especially where dead weeds touch wood siding or stored items.
Under trees and around parked trailers or equipment, where leaves and weeds collect together.
If you can, cut down or rake out the worst of the dead growth and haul it off rather than leaving it in a pile next to a building.
Why it matters now
Dead weeds dry out fast in low humidity, and a dry, windy day can make them a real fire concern, especially on rural lots outside town. A clean strip around buildings, fences, and fuel tanks is one of the simplest ways to make a property safer and easier to manage. It also keeps the place looking cared for and cuts down on hiding spots for rodents, snakes, and insects over the winter.
Late fall and winter is also a good time to plan ahead. The ground you clear now is the same ground that will sprout a new crop of weeds once spring warms up. Planning a bare-ground or pre-emergent treatment for fence lines, gravel areas, and lot edges before then can save a lot of work later.
