Cockroaches in Your Midland or Odessa Kitchen This Fall: Where They Hide and What Helps

In Midland and Odessa, fall is when a lot of families notice roaches in the kitchen. The house is closed up, the oven is running more, and boxes from online orders and grocery runs pile up by the back door. The small tan roach with two dark stripes behind its head is the German cockroach, and it is the one most often found inside West Texas kitchens and bathrooms. It lives indoors year-round, it breeds fast, and it hides in warm, tight spots close to food and water.

Tip: do a flashlight check after dark

German cockroaches hide during the day and come out at night. A couple of hours after the kitchen goes quiet, turn the lights off, wait a few minutes, then check these spots with a flashlight:

  • Under the kitchen sink, around the pipes and the back of the cabinet.

  • Behind and under the fridge, stove, and dishwasher, where it stays warm.

  • Hinges and corners of cabinets and drawers, and the gap where the counter meets the wall.

  • Bathroom vanities, around the toilet base and under the sink.

  • Small electronics and appliances like the microwave, coffee maker, and toaster.

Also look for small dark specks that look like pepper or coffee grounds, shed skins, and egg cases. Those signs often show up before you see a live roach.

Why it matters now

Fall in the Permian Basin brings more cooking, more holiday baking, and more cardboard coming into the house. German cockroaches often ride in on boxes, grocery bags, and used appliances, and once inside they can spread from one cabinet to the next. One sighting can mean many more hiding nearby. Bug sprays from the store can scatter them deeper into walls and cabinets without reaching the nest, which is why the problem can seem to come back.

A few habits help a lot:

  1. Wipe counters and the stovetop every night, and do not leave dishes or pet food out overnight.

  2. Fix dripping faucets and wipe up water under sinks.

  3. Break down boxes and get them out of the house quickly.

  4. Keep food in sealed containers and take out the trash daily.

What Tejas does

Tejas Pest and Weed Control handles cockroach problems in homes and businesses across Midland, Odessa, and the Permian Basin. When we come out, we find where the roaches are hiding, treat those harborage spots inside cabinets, behind appliances, and along plumbing, and show you the cleanup and moisture fixes that keep them from coming back. We also treat the outside of the home so other pests have a harder time getting in as the weather cools.
