Fall Tree Injections in Midland and Odessa: Treat Before Your Trees Go Dormant

Walk through a few Midland and Odessa neighborhoods this time of year and you might spot a tree with small capsules ringed around the base of the trunk. That is a trunk injection, one of the most direct ways to get treatment into a tree. Late fall, before the leaves come off, is a good time to think about whether your trees could use one.

Tip: check your trees while the leaves are still on

Before the first hard freeze, take a few minutes and look at each tree in your yard. Leaves still on the branches tell you a lot:

  • Thin or patchy canopy compared to past years, or whole limbs that leafed out weak this season.

  • Yellow leaves with green veins, which can point to a nutrient problem common in our alkaline West Texas soil.

  • Sawdust, small holes, or oozing sap on the trunk or larger limbs, which can be signs of borers.

  • Speckled, dusty, or bronzed leaves, which can mean mites.

  • Spots, cankers, or dieback that showed up during the summer heat.

Snap a few photos of anything that looks off. Once the leaves drop, a lot of these clues are gone until spring.

Why it matters now

Injected and soil-applied treatments move through a tree with water. A tree that still has leaves and is still pulling water from the soil can take treatment up and move it through the trunk and limbs. Once a tree goes fully dormant, uptake slows way down.

That makes the last stretch of fall a useful window in the Permian Basin. Trees that struggled through a hot, dry summer go into winter already stressed, and stressed trees are more likely to have trouble with borers and disease the next year. Getting a plan in place now means your tree heads into winter and spring with support instead of falling further behind.

What Tejas does

Tejas Pest and Weed Control works on trees for homes and businesses across Midland, Odessa, and the Permian Basin. We start by looking at the trunk, limbs, leaves, and root zone and talking through what we see. Depending on the tree and the problem, treatment can include:

  • Trunk injections, where small capsules or ports feed treatment straight into the tree

  • Soil injections around the root zone

  • Wood borer treatment

  • Mite treatments

  • Disease and fungus treatments

  • Malnutrition support, including help for yellowing leaves

  • Foliar and systemic treatments

A trunk injection visit is quick and tidy. There is no spray drifting across the yard, and the capsules come off once the tree has taken the treatment up. We will tell you what we used it for and what to watch for afterward.
