Fall Tree Stress Recovery in Seminole & Andrews: Drip-Line and Canopy Check After a Hot Permian Summer

Oct 12
3 min read

A long, hot Permian Basin summer is hard on shade trees. By October, a lot of trees around Seminole and Andrews are carrying the stress of triple-digit afternoons, dry wind, and limited water. The good news is that fall is a practical time to check on them and help them recover before winter dormancy.

Here is a simple walk-through you can do this week, plus when it makes sense to call in help.

Signs of summer stress to look for now

Stand back from the tree first, then get close. Common fall stress signs on West Texas shade trees include:

  • Thin or patchy canopy. Fewer leaves at the top or outer edges than last year.

  • Scorched or browned leaf edges. Often from heat and drying wind on the side of the tree that takes the afternoon sun.

  • Early leaf drop. Some fall drop is normal, but heavy drop well ahead of neighboring trees of the same kind can point to stress.

  • Dieback at branch tips. Bare twig ends that do not leaf out.

  • Sticky leaves or black, sooty film. Often a sign of sap-feeding insects like aphids or scale leaving honeydew behind.

  • Fine stippling or webbing on leaves. Can indicate spider mites, which tend to build up in hot, dry weather.

None of these alone means a tree is in trouble, but two or three together are worth a closer look.

Check the drip line, not just the trunk

The drip line is the ring on the ground directly under the outer edge of the canopy. Many of a tree's active feeder roots sit in the top layer of soil out toward and past that ring, not tight against the trunk.

Grab a long screwdriver or soil probe and push it into the ground at a few spots along the drip line:

  • If it will barely go in, the soil is likely dry and compacted.

  • If it slides in easily several inches deep, there is usable moisture.

When you water, spread it slowly across the drip-line zone so it soaks deep rather than running off. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk, and avoid piling soil or gravel over the root zone.

Look up: canopy pests heading into fall

Flip over a handful of leaves on different sides of the tree. You are looking for clusters of small insects, bumps on twigs and stems (scale), webbing, or honeydew. Stressed trees can be less able to handle pest pressure, and fall is a calmer window to address canopy issues before leaves come down.

What not to do this fall

  • Skip heavy pruning until the tree is dormant, unless a branch is dead, broken, or a hazard.

  • Do not guess at fertilizer. Pushing new growth late in the season can work against a tree getting ready for winter.

  • Do not wait for spring if you are already seeing dieback or pests. Checking now gives you options before the first hard freeze.
