Tumbleweeds & Fence-Line Weeds in Andrews and Seminole: Fall Cleanup Before the Wind Season

If you live on the edge of Andrews or out past the city limits in Seminole, you already know what October brings. The big green weeds that grew all summer along fence lines, empty lots, and caliche drives start turning tan and stiff. Give them a few windy weeks and they snap off at the base and roll straight into your fence, your shop door, or the neighbor's yard.

Local tip: check the fence line this week

Walk your fence line, back alley, and any open lot next to the house. Look for two plants in particular:

  • Russian thistle, the classic West Texas tumbleweed. It turns woody and prickly as it dries.

  • Kochia, a bushy, upright weed that can turn reddish in fall before it browns out.

Both are summer annuals. They don't come back from the root. Each new crop grows from seed, and a dried plant spreads seed as it bounces across the ground. That's why one weedy lot can turn into a whole block of weedy lots.

Why it matters now

Fall is the turning point for these weeds. Once the plants are fully dry, spraying them does very little, because there is nothing green left to take up a treatment. What you can still do is keep them from breaking off and scattering seed, and set up the ground so next year's crop has a harder time getting started.

Dry tumbleweeds piled against a fence, a propane tank, or a shed also become a fire and safety concern, and they hide trash, holes, and pests that like cover. Cutting them down and hauling them off while they're still anchored is far easier than chasing them across the pasture after a cold front.

Here are a few simple steps for Andrews and Seminole homeowners:

  1. Cut or mow fence-line weeds before the stems snap, and bag or haul off the dried plants so they don't roll away.

  2. Clear a strip along fences, sheds, and tanks so you can spot new seedlings early.

  3. Note where the worst patches were this year. Those spots are where seed is already in the soil.

  4. Plan a treatment for those spots ahead of late-winter and spring germination, instead of waiting until the weeds are knee-high again in June.

What Tejas does

Tejas Pest and Weed Control handles fence-line, lot, and bare-ground weed control for homes, acreage, and businesses around Andrews and Seminole. We walk the property with you, look at what is growing and where, and build a plan that fits the spot. That can mean a cleanup pass now, a residual treatment for fence lines and gravel areas where nothing should grow, and follow-up visits when new weeds come up in spring. For lawns, we keep the treatment on the weeds and off the turf you want to keep.

Tejas Pest and Weed Control serves Andrews, Seminole, and the surrounding Permian Basin from our Andrews yard at 2184 SE 2460, Andrews, TX 79714. Midland and Odessa neighbors are covered from 3112 E County Rd 139, Midland, TX 79706.
